Furnace Oil, either as a distillate or a residual, is a fraction derived from petroleum distillation. Broadly speaking, fuel oil is any liquid petroleum product that is burned for heat generation in a furnace or boiler or used for power generation in an engine, with the exception of oils with a flash point of about 40 ° C (104 ° F) and oils burned in cotton or wool-wool burners.

Furnace oil in the current marketing range meets Bureau of Indian Standards Specification IS: 1593 – 1982 for fuel oils, grade MV2.
